The Craziest Tax Scam You’ve Never Heard Of?

Only if you’ve been living under a rock for the last twenty years or so.

I remember the first guy I encountered who believed he wasn’t legally obligated to pay taxes. We were working for a law firm in DC. I was young, and just as inquisitive and open-minded as I am now, and he started explaining it to me, how once you learn the system you don’t have to pay taxes.

He got past the first hurdle, and avoided the company withholding. Then the IRS started putting pressure on the company. I was told by one of the partners, “if he keeps this up and it becomes a matter of us being penalized for his choices, he’ll be fired.”

This had to be sometime in the 90s. Back then it was just jabberwocky about avoiding taxes. I guess this was before it evolved into armed resistance against authority, shooting cops, etc. Back then it was a couple of scamsters getting rich selling you the “educational materials” you needed to learn how to “properly” file bogus tax returns. I don’t remember hearing about the secret bank account associated with every citizen back then that you could draw against with special Notes. I heard about those sometime later. But it’s all the same scam. The only winner is the joker selling the scam.

The linked video is pretty entertaining, though. Shows the result of a Sovereign Citizen trying to shove his way between a couple of obstructive bailiffs.  Go. Watch. Enjoy. Thank me later.

P.S., don’t get me wrong, I don’t want to pay my taxes either. It’s a lot of money, some of it going to support stuff I don’t necessarily agree with.

Murder Ballad of the Week, 4/13/15: Tom Dooley

Wikipedia states that this is part of a broader genre of “sweetheart” murder ballads. I’m going to have to go ahead and disagree with that there. In no culture do we murder our sweethearts. Murdering a love interest is a sure sign of pathological narcissism. NOT LOVE.

Here’s Doc Watson’s version.  The oldest recorded version is by Grayson & Whittier in 1929.

There’s also a couple of video documentaries that discuss the story at the root of the song, linked below:

De-winterizing the boat is fun… -ish.

We went down to the boat yesterday. The goal was to get a few things taken care of in terms of winterizing the boat. Change the oil, run all the antifreeze out of it, inspect for the next thing on the repair list, etc.

Oil change was a no-brainer, but when we started it up to run it for a while to run the antifreeze out of it, it appeared, and I vaguely remember this from last year, that there was an air bubble in the cooling system. It spat out a bit of the winter pink stuff, but then stopped, and the exhaust alarm went off, so we shut it down. We ran out of time to deal with it yesterday, so I attacked it this morning. One approach is to open the cap on the heat exchanger and fill it to the brim with coolant (or water, since we’re seawater-cooled), and run the engine some more, hoping that helps to fill the cavity and create the suction needed to get it flowing.

So sure, I did that, and then realized I didn’t have enough battery juice to get a start. It wasn’t holding a charge up to the level needed to generate a charge. So I went down into the battery box and popped the cells open. Sure enough, the fluid levels were low. Fortunately we had saved some distilled water aboard just for that. I topped up the cells with distilled water, reassembled everything and turned things back on. Quickly the system was able to charge the batteries beyond the required level for starts. Only now, the starter won’t even engage. Perplexing.

I remember when we installed the batteries last year that a loose connection generated the same type of failure. Going back down there last year and checking and tightening the battery connections resolved the problem last year. Not today. I checked them all, they didn’t move. I tightened them all, and still just a click on the start, no turnover. We ran out of time because of our plan to head home, but now we’re two tasks in the hole. We need to get the starter to turn over and then watch to make sure the air bubble is gone from the cooling system.

Meanwhile, last night around dinnertime, a crazy storm blew through Irvington, bringing heavy winds, sideways rain and frequent lightning. We headed over to Thai Pot for dinner just as the storm hit the club. We had already closed down the boat for the duration. Nice Thai dinner, and by the time we got back the storm was gone and the water was still as glass.

This morning it was still again, and look at all the pollen that had been dumped on the still creek.

Vintage centerfolds

I just found a site, completely by accident, that seems to collect, present and celebrate vintage centerfolds, many from 70s-era Playboy, Penthouse, Cavalier, etc. You know, before porn was at our fingertips via cable TV and the Internet, when you had to actually walk into a place and ask for it by name, as if you were ordering a whiskey, with confidence and no shame or self-doubt, and that was okay, because gender roles were pretty stiff and everyone was too whacked out on liquor and pills to much give a shit about anything, including their kids, who were rummaging around in the trash rooms of their apartment complex looking for random stuff but really hoping to find exactly this. But I digress… Had I given you the link in the beginning you wouldn’t have read this far.
