Murder Ballad of the Week, 3/16/15: Frankie and Albert

Also known as Frankie and Johnny, as performed by other artists, this one is the story of a man who wins a dance competition with a woman other than his own, and when he returns home, he is shot in the stomach by his scorned woman. Infidelity? It was only dancing. But that’s enough for a scorned woman, and apparently Frankie had had enough at that point.

Finally got to see Salad Days!

Finally got to see a Salad Days screening last night. Eve and I went down to Richmond to catch the film at the historic Byrd Theater. The theater itself is beautiful.

The film itself was well-put-together. Lots of scene veterans talking about the scene’s various evolutions and its eventual demise. Lots of footage of bands I’ve seen in places I’ve been, lots of great stories — my favorite was the “Georgetown safe places story.”

We werent planning on staying for the Q&A, had to get back home from the burg, but then we ended up running into Chris Gallo on the street out front, which was better than any dumb old Q&A anyway!

Sad update to my Slab City Library contribution…

If you follow my intermittent ramblings, you will know that a little over two months ago I mailed a box of maybe twenty books to the Slab City Library ( http://bobgerman.com/blog/support-the-free-library/ ) in hopes that some of my neglected books from the basement would get a second life.

Today I received the box, returned empty…

…except for the nice little card I had written to accompany the books.

I know damn well I packed and secured that box well.

I have little choice but to assume that the package was intercepted and the contents taken, as an overtly aggressive act. Hard to imagine this occurring accidentally.

Thoughts?

American Hardcore – The History of Punk Rock 1980-1986

I’m having a ball watching this one. We have tix17094_AH_Amaray_alt to the Salad Days screening in Richmond tomorrow, so I took today to watch this documentary, which is a little bit older (2006).

Fascinating stories – Jack Grisham and the pipe bomb; Henry’s induction into Black Flag.  The fact that HR was pimping Think And Grow Rich on the younger generation, the “undergraduates,” as he referred to them, and it was WORKING. It gave them the PMA they needed to make it happen. Ian talking about growing up white in DC and going to public schools where you’re a 10% minority.

Awesome footage – lots of Bad Brains footage and band members talking. Show violence.  DOA. Flipper. Minor Threat. Black Flag, with and without Henry. Kira on feminism, Mugger on his life (from runaway to Black Flag roadie to SST accountant to independently wealthy CPA), discussions about the LA punk riots, NYC street kids.

A great breakdown of the evolution of hardcore and how it spread around the country, evolved and then suddenly fizzled out and died.

Of course, it missed some of the stuff I witnessed and loved, but that’s what tomorrow’s thing is for — the hyper-local focus.

Pre-reading documentation…

Mornings friends! And happy Pi Day! A very special Pi Day, too, because the date lines up in a way to add the time. 3/14/15 9:26 etc.

Or Steak & a BJ day, if you prefer that particular holiday.

I was supposed to run in the rock ‘n’ roll Dc half marathon today, but I got sick last weekend, and I’m just not recovered enough to run 13 miles in 50° rain. Sad. But I did pick up my T-shirt on the way home yesterday.

Meanwhile, I’m about to embark on the journey of reading this book I won, The Presidents and UFOs, by Larry Holcombe, and wanted to document my thoughts before reading it.

I don’t believe we have yet encountered aliens that we can interact with. I don’t think a secret like that could be contained, and I don’t think there’s much reason to.

Cats could be aliens. That I’d buy.

That doesn’t mean I’m afraid of the idea or don’t want them to exist. I think it might be the entropy we need to save us.

Minor, yet engaging coincidentry.

Gross Pointe Blank – the scene where Martin engages in a shootout with his rivals in the UltiMart, just before bobheadblowing it to smithereens, while the clerk is in the zone playing videogames and listening to Motorhead’s Ace of Spades.

a little bit later…

Fast Sofa – Jake Busey wearing a Black Flag t-shirt, Motorhead’s Ace of Spades playing in the background, just before he blows up some douchebag’s pickup truck with a flaming crossbow.

Asia Carrera is a SPACE ALIEN.

The Pastafariaasian thing (the only member of the Pastafarian Church in Utah to be photographed for her license with a colander on her head “in accordance with religious beliefs” blah blah blah — I actually thought that was cute. I like it when people challenge the status quo on these kinds of things, and I like it when porn stars break the mold and do things outside the porn star box. It makes them seem more human and less plastic.

But holy crap. .254? She blew a .254? Her lawyer could probably get that thrown out just from being so high a number. “Your honor, nobody can possibly blow a .254 and still be standing.” And at 2pm “sleeping on a couch” in the school district office. That means she had to have been that fucked up a few hours earlier, or even more so. I’m intrigued, and want to know more! Was this an all-nighter? Or a breakfast binge? If it’s an all-nighter, who let her leave after drinking that much?
